Major Tool & Machine Brings NASA’s Artemis Mission Home to Indianapolis

Major Tool & Machine, supplier on NASA’s Space Launch System, a critical piece of NASA’s return to the Moon and journey to deep space, met with Members of Congress and Congressional staff, including representatives from Indiana to advocate on behalf of suppliers nation-wide.

More than 18,000 jobs across all 50 states are involved in launching the first woman and next man to the Moon, and Major Tool & Machine highlighted their contributions along with about 100 Space Launch System, Exploration Ground Systems and Orion supplier companies from across 29 states at the ninth annual suppliers’ conference, held virtually this year.

Major Tool & Machine in support of NASA’s Space Launch System is supporting the missions that will ultimately send humans farther into deep space than ever before.

Under NASA’s Artemis program, the agency will first test the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft as an integrated system ahead of crewed flights, and the journey to the launch pad for Artemis I is well under way. The agency recently performed a test of the rocket’s core stage, and the Orion spacecraft transferred from Lockheed Martin to NASA’s Exploration Ground Systems team at Kennedy Space Center for processing and preparation for launch. In addition, Exploration Ground Systems is nearing the completion of booster stacking, the assembly of the five-segment 177-foot long twin solid rocket boosters, at Kennedy’s massive Vehicle Assembly Building.

Major Tool &Machine is supporting NASA’s goal of sending humans back to the Moon and then to Mars through its contribution to Artemis’ deep space exploration systems, while advancing American manufacturing, technology and innovation, and helping to inspire the next generation of explorers and engineers.

Celebrating 75 Years

We're turning 75!

2021 marks the 75th anniversary of Major Tool & Machine's founding, and we're proud to recognize and celebrate our continued growth over the years.

In 1946, Charles W. Davis founded Major Tool & Machine to support the commercialization of the jet engine following World War II. Starting with four men, Charlie Davis grew Major Tool by specializing in jet aircraft maintenance, overhaul tooling, and ground support equipment. As experts in welding and machining, they built precision engine assembly, disassembly tools, and all types of stands and dollies for OEM jet engine manufacturers to support domestic and foreign airlines.

In 1970 when Charlie Davis retired, he split the business ownership between his son Elmer Davis and John Weyreter, a toolmaker, engineer, and salesman. John became President, and the two grew the business together until 1977 when Elmer Davis semi-retired and sold his ownership to John Weyreter.

Through the 1970s & 1980’s John grew the business and helped develop new markets in the power generation, aerospace and defense industries. During this time, Major Tool received many industry awards for its’ quality work and ability to support critical programs.

In 1988 John’s son, Steve Weyreter, took over as President, and John became Chairman of the Board. In 1991 John became Chairman of the NTMA.

Major Tool continues to grow while supporting the power generation, aerospace, defense, nuclear, oil & gas, and commercial industries.

Today, our 400+ employees proudly continue to serve our country’s needs and the complex manufacturing needs of our industry partners.

Check out our latest feature in WRTV Hiring Hoosiers! Mike Griffith and Kendra O'Brien discuss our participation in the Central Indiana FAME program and the amazing opportunities available for skilled trades.

The FAME/AMT program is a nationally recognized, industry-driven partnership between Central Indiana manufacturers and Vincennes University. The goal of our program is to create “global best” skilled worker talent to meet the needs of a rapidly growing manufacturing sector. Employers have come together to form two FAME chapters in the Central Indiana region. The Central Indiana Chapter, based in the greater Indianapolis region, includes reputable manufactures such as Major Tool & Machine, 3M, Aero Industries, and Steel Dynamics Inc. The Hoosier Chapter, based in the Madison/Hamilton/Tipton/Delaware county region, includes Red Gold and Nestle USA. Our two chapters have come together, in partnership with Vincennes University, to construct an Advanced Manufacturing Center for the education of our student technicians.
